Before forming an association of Nagarathars in Mumbai, the Panguni Uttaram Festival Committee was formed in 1974 by 12 Chettiar families living in Mumbai due to their devotion to Panchavati Karthikeyan.
The Panguni Uthiram festival is being conducted by Mumbai Nagarathars since 1975, the Thaipusam since 1997, and the Vaikasi Visakham since 2007, with full enthusiasm and full devotion, in collaboration with the local people.
It should be kept in mind that this ancient temple, was founded in the year 1865 by one of the Nagarathars from Mumbai. Now (in 2022), the temple is 157 years old.
The Nagarathars of Mumbai have been making all the arrangements for all the festivals by going one or two days in advance. Also on many occasions Mumbai Nagarathars separately go to Nasik to offer prayers, appeal and worship Panchavati Murugan.
The Nagarathar families of Mumbai are emotionally attached to Panchavati Murugan and their affection is revealed as many of their male children have been named as “Karthik”.
Even during the 3-day Karthikai Purnima festival celebrated by the Marathas in the temple, the nagarathars of Mumbai have been a providing great support to Kasi Nattukottai Nagara Chatram Committee Members. During this festival, it attracts lakhs of devotees to the temple.
So far 4 times Kumbabisegam of the temple have been performed i.e. 1972, 1992, 2004, 2010, and in all of these Mumbai Nagarathars actively participated.
Every year we are celebrating Vel Pooja by bringing the Vel from Nasik Murugan Temple. The vel was donated by Mumbai Nagarathars. Mumbai Nagarathars also made Silver Vaganam for Pillaiyar and Silver Kavasam for Urshava Moorthy, Ganapathy and Murugar.
