The Nattukottai Chettiars migrated to neighboring countries for business many centuries ago but only in the nineteenth century, they had come to Mumbai for business.
If we wish to talk about BNSCA (Bombay Nagarathar Social and Cultural Association), we must first talk about its parent organization, the 'Mumbai Nagarathar Panguni Uttaram Festival Committee
Inspired by the natural devotion to Lord Murugan, the 12 Chettiar families who lived in Mumbai few decades back used to go to Nashik and visit Lord Murugan (Karthik) temple there. Then they formed a Panguni Uthiram Festival Committee in the year 1974 (Bombay Nagarathar Panguni Uthiram Festival committee). The next step was forming of Bombay Nagarathar Social & Cultural Association. Thiru AV Ramanathan Chettiar from Vegupatti was the architect who formed this association.
Our association was registered and started its journey at the Malabar Hills residence of Thiru. KM. Venkatachalam Chettiar (Kadiyapatti), who was in a senior position in Western Papers. The work of Thiru AV. Ramanathan Chettiar and Thiru. KM. Venkatachalam Chettiar, in forming this association and nurturing it initially is commendable and memorable.
Quite a few of tamil festivals and programmes for children and elders were arranged regularly for every member to meet and participate at regular intervals.
Initially, for BNSCA a small flat was purchased at Garodia Nagar, Ghatkopar and then the same was sold and a bigger house was purchased in Mulund Colony. Then the current land wherein the new building has come up was purchased in the year 2005.
A special lecture is held every year to highlight the cultural heritage of our society to the younger generation. The lecture titled 'Meenakshi Narayana Memorial Lecture' has been formed with the donation from Ariyakudi Narayanan Meenakshi Trust. Many popular Tamil speakers have come and delivered lectures.
Vilakku Poojai is held annually with religious fervent and enthusiasm and the same is organised by the Women’s committee of BNSCA.
Every year on Aug 15th, Vel Poojai is celebrated in Mumbai by bringing the Vel from Nasik Murugan Temple.
Eligible students are selected and provided with scholarships and marriage grants for eligible women are given, every year to help our community.
